Rowhedge Village Hall, Essex On Tour
The Village Hall is now in its 25th year. It was built by the East Donyland Community Association (EDCA) as a replacement for the old Pavilion, which at the time was the only public building in Rowhedge where meetings and indoor events could be held.

The project received strong support from the Parish Council, who leased the site adjacent to the Recreation Ground to EDCA. Back in the 1980s, there were less grants available for community projects than there are now, and vigorous fund raising efforts were necessary, ranging from taking part in the London Marathon, to running a charity shop for second hand goods.

The building project took place in two phases, with much of the internal finishing being carried out by amateur labour. The small hall was handed over in Nov 1983, and the whole building was finally opened by Lord Seebohm in 1989. Shortly after this it was entered for the Times/RIBA Community Architecture award, where it received a Commendation, presented by the Prince of Wales.

With the exception of some increased storage, the building has remained much as it was originally, although, due to its high use, makes continuous demands on maintenance and refurbishment. It is run by a small group of dedicated volunteer EDCA members, some of whom were in the founding group.

Head out of Colchester on the B1025 Mersea Road turn left towards Rowhedge and Rectory Road. Continue on this road until you come into the village. The hall is situated on Rectory Road.
