Hard Times

To celebrate the 200th Anniversary of Charles Dickens in 2012, artist, actor and musician Nick Ellis will be performing ‘Hard Times’ at theatre venues across the UK.

Following on from his successful tour of ‘Pirate Jenny’ Nick Ellis becomes the many voices of ‘Hard Times’, including the retentive Gradgrind and the overbearing Mr Bounderby.

A seasoned musician and performer he delivers the story backed up by his own images and his own original music.

In this magnificent story, Dickens changed the course of British social history, throwing a light on today’s ‘hard times’.

First opened in 1989, the Towngate Theatre is owned by Basildon District Council and is run by the Council's Cultural Services section. After a period of partial closure the Towngate re-opened fully in summer 2006 as an important feature of Basildon Council's modern cultural strategy.

Work is continually underway to build up a show calendar which will include shows put together by Towngate Promotions, as well as popular, entertaining and occasionally, more cultural and controversial productions brought in from elsewhere. All chosen to appeal to as large a cross section of people as possible.

Importantly, the venue continues to attract many nearby performance arts schools and amateur production groups who contribute so importantly to the District's cultural scene.

As well as being used for many smaller stage performances and concerts the Mirren Studio is also commonly used for business and arts exhibitions, seminars, meetings and various other functions. more
